About the Artist
Rebecca Mauldin, Glass Artist
I have been working with glass since 1983 after taking beginning stained glass classes and myriad art classes at the University of Utah and the Salt Lake Art Center. A decade later, while living in Auburn, Alabama, I began to fill commission orders for special gift occasions – weddings, anniversaries, and even memorial gifts. In 2002, my artistic expression advanced to a new level as I was exploring working with high quality art glass and trying new ways to present the traditional stained glass panel. Gradually, my original panels began to demonstrate an elegant finesse and boldness that one art critic wrote, after viewing my gallery online, Your ability to express movement in glass sets much of your work apart from other stained glass artisans.
What my creations do for the average person is to meet a desire to buy something different for themselves or a loved one. They seek emotional satisfaction and, usually, want to break out of a pattern of giving the same nice gifts – toys, tools, cologne & perfume, confections and fine jewelry. My customers, whether they have dictated an image very specifically to me or said, Surprise me!, look forward to and enjoy the initial viewing of their completed order. Art glass as an art medium projects an ethereal essence when illuminated. Although I do make windows using lead, zinc or brass came, the copper-foiled technique of Tiffany is still my favorite. To me, it is painterly, meditative and allows me to explore hot metal embellishments. Frequently, I add copper and brass wire or rods, glass jewels, glass gems, or different shaped glass beads to the panel. It is a fun way to extend my creativity further with the goal to render impressionism in glass. Once the panel is finished and the glass and metalwork is cleaned, patina is applied, and it's buffed to a palatable sheen, both the illuminated art glass and the soldered metal will cast a soft glow from the light of many glowing candles.
I remake (but still customize) certain themes for one part of what is becoming a multi-faceted market for my stained glass business. After only two years of marketing, an increased demand for my work is surfacing. Perseverance pays off! In fact, some of my suitcase-sized cyclist panels have been taken as special gifts all the way to Spain, Italy and The Netherlands. Obviously, cycling is an international sport and passion. Another niche I've been developing in the art market is in personalized home decor. Many of my one-of-a-kind panels reside in Master baths, children and teen's bedrooms and even a preschool. Speculating, I believe a home owner is buying from me, a special panel for a special place: for the serene and romantic Master bath, or for a young girl's first bedroom decoration. Even teenagers are attracted to the bold, bright colors of my diverse design styles and tend to purchase for themselves. I've not yet done a commission for what used to be called the ìpicture windowî, but what has made my work stand out is that it IS a picture, expressive in design, color and texture and alive with motion. Just like a photograph, but without the image obscured.
